When 1950- built comprehensive Lavington School got the go-ahead to refurbish its decaying curtain walling, it chose System10 Curtain Walling from Bowater Architectural – one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of energy efficient architectural facades and entrance systems.
A condition survey found that the school, based in rural Wiltshire, needed to replace its curtain walling and the single glazed metal framed windows – many were fixed shut because the hinges had failed. Initially 18 bays of curtain walling and glazing were to be replaced until the discovery of blue asbestos – fixed behind old panels as a firebreak – disrupted the works timetable. As the work was scheduled for the holidays, it was vital to complete the schedule before the 685 pupils returned, so only seven bays were replaced – with the remainder to be completed the following break.
